The Hawk -Douglas Florian

I stare
I glare
I gaze
I gawk
With keen
Mean eyes
I am the hawk.
All day I pray
For prey to view.
Be thankful if
I don’t
see
YOU!
Analysis:
I enjoyed this poem because of the way the author ended it. The author begins be describing the hawk, grabbing your attention, then he ends it humorously. I like it :)

Lifeline -Shonto Begay

Into the distance we ride
Upon this road, grey and oily we ride
Toward the sacred mountain of the west
Toward the stories and songs of all-night ceremony
The roar of the wind in our ears
The smell of fresh oil and sage clings to us.

We have seen ourselves on this road since childhood
We have sat up front, we have sat in the back
We have felt the dry heat burning our lungs
We have felt the chill of winter stinging our faces
We have laughed and we have cried upon this road
We have left more than tire marks upon this road.

This is the lifeline of our land
This road which we travel day and night
This road that connects our communities
Our families and our responsibilities.
Years from now-into the setting sun,
On this road we will still ride.
Analysis:
I liked this poem because of how the author puts life in a metaphor, a road. The poem describes
experiences we have encountered. I really liked how the author says "We have felt the dry heat burning our lungs. We have felt the chill of winter stinging our faces" because I could feel it just by reading it.
This line really appealed to me "Years from now-into the setting sun, On this road we will still ride." however, I'm not exactly sure why I like it so much.

There is another sky -Emily Dickinson

There is another sky,
Ever serene and fair,
And there is another sunshine,
Though it be darkness there;
Never mind faded forests, Austin,
Never mind silent fields -
Here is a little forest,
Whose leaf is ever green;
Here is a brighter garden,
Where not a frost has been;
In its unfading flowers
I hear the bright bee hum:
Prithee, my brother,
Into my garden come!

Analysis:

I chose this poem because the imagery really struck me and I felt this sensation of hope and beauty. When I read this poem for the first time, I thought of the Promised Land that God promised the Israelites. God promised a land flowing with milk and honey to the Israelites. His only command was to follow Him and trust that He would take them to the Promised Land. “There is another sky, Ever serene and fair, And there is another sunshine, Though it be darkness there; …Prithee, my brother, Into my garden come!” This evoked a certain feeling of security and protection, like God had and has been watching over me through the whole course of my life.
