A sea of Peace and Joy and Light
Beyond my reach I know.
In me the storm-tossed weeping night
Finds room to rage and flow.
I cry aloud, but all in vain;
I helpless, the earth unkind
What soul of might can share my pain?
In me the storm-tossed weeping night
Finds room to rage and flow.
I cry aloud, but all in vain;
I helpless, the earth unkind
What soul of might can share my pain?
Death-dart alone I find.
A raft am I on the sea of Time,
My oars are washed away.
How can I hope to reach the clime
Of God's eternal Day?
But hark! I hear Thy golden Flute,
Its notes bring the Summit down.
Now safe am I, O Absolute!
Gone death, gone night's stark frown!

Paraphrase-
Peace, Joy, and Light are beyond my reach and in me is a storm of rage.
I cry out loud, but helpless, I am. Who could share my pain? Only death will.
I am a raft stranded in the sea with no oars, so how can I hope to reach God’s eternal day?
But listen! I hear a golden flute! Death is gone! Now I am safe!

Attitude- In the first three stanzas, the author speaks as if he has no hope. He is helplessly in pain, lost, and doubtful that he will ever have hope. Then in the final stanza, he begins with “Hark!” meaning, listen! I hear a golden flute! I hear hope! Then he continues and says that he is safe, for death has gone.
Shifts- There is a shift in between the third and fourth stanza. The author’s tone goes from a pessimistic tone to a hopeful jubilant tone.
Title- The golden flute is reminding us of the hope we have through our Savior.
Theme- The golden flute announces the arrival of Jesus. He is the Savior and grants me hope in living, through Him. This poem is saying, though our life may seem meaningless, hopeless, and not worth living, if we look deeper into our hearts, we always have Jesus; all we have to do is listen for the golden flute of hope.
